Prologue

            The Change. That's what people have taken to calling it now. Nothing like this has happened before and the whole world panicked. In an instant all the power went out and a third of the population gained random powers. It was like an EMP was set off and the aftereffects were magic. If there had been some sort of forewarning, or if God was there to give us guidance, maybe hundreds of millions of people would not have died in the first 48 hours. No one knows what happened to this day. Some speculate it was aliens and that they were trying to change the course of our evolution by adding magic. No one has seen anything that has claimed to be aliens, even though there are hundreds of new terrifying species that are popping up every day.  Other people said that this was the plan all along for us. God had just wanted to add magic so that it could be survival of the fittest for his entertainment. Like some fucked up reality TV show. Aliens, God, or just some fluke in our genetic code, humans are struggling to survive.

            Overnight, almost ⅓ of the world's population died due to random, senseless violence as people were trying to figure out what amazing new power they had.  Then as the days went on hundreds of thousands more died as the people who had the mysterious powers, took what they wanted from the null with force. The null was the unfortunate, the majority of the world's population who were unlucky enough to not be given powers. This group of people were rapidly dying off. They couldn't compete when someone with a flamethrower power or could launch rocks with their mind, came to steal what null had. They were a dying breed in the end.

            The violence, destruction, and lack of electricity wasn't the only thing killing the earth. Animals you knew and loved evolved into nightmarish creatures. Taking a walk to the local grocery store was now a gamble for your life. You never knew if the stray dog you passed by in the road was going to attack you with razor sharp teeth or if it was going to sprout wings and fly away. New species never thought of before appeared out of thin air. It's like we were a running joke to God and he only wanted us to suffer. With no power, people were forced to be hunter-gatherers again. The problem being, you didn't know if Bambi was actually harmless or if it actually was mutated with acid spit, razor sharp hooves and a hankering for your blood. This resulted in many people starving, only going out to look for food when absolutely necessary. Humanity was suffering, and if they didn't learn how to not kill each other on whim or how to survive with the ever-changing fauna population, humanity would die out.
